Brookside Creek
In contrast to the longer valleys to the west, north, and east, Gateway Valley is small and contained, enclosed by steep slopes that
curve around it, and cut by deep sinuous ravines. Its complex geology is responsible for its unusual number of year round seeps and springs
- and its frequent landslides.

Brookside Creek
"The project as proposed would directly impact high to moderate
quality riparian vegetation on Brookside Creek including stands of mature
sycamore/oak woodland. These trees provide foraging, nesting and
roosting sites for a variety of species including cavity nesting species
and resident and migratory songbirds. The vegetated steep canyons also
provide summer refugia from the hot, dry conditions typical of most of
the site and surrounding area."
(letter, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Sacramento
Office, to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, San Francisco District, Nov.
7, 1997)

Nest of a Great Horned Owl
Over 80 species of birds make Gateway Valley their permanent or migratory home, relying primarily on the riparian corridor of the creeks such as Brookside.

The Pacific Tree Frog
Amphibians need very cold and clean water. Brookside Creek is home
to three species of frogs, which is very rare, and when the trees the
creek supports are destroyed, it will affect the water temperature and the
frog's habitat.
